THE BLACKHAND GANG WAS HERE

A

When Daniel and his friends arrived at the Sports Centre yesterday, they got a terrible shock. Some vandals had broken into the Centre during the night and had caused a great deal of damage.

The first place they had vandalized was the sports hall. They had left equipment everywhere. They had thrown footballs, baseball bats and boxing gloves all over the floor. Someone had written a message on the wall in red paint. The message said, “The Blackhand gang was here. See you in the weights room!”.

In the weights room, the vandals had overturned exercise machines and had dropped weights on the floor. They had also broken some windows. This time the message was on the door and it said, “Goodbye for now”.

When he had seen all the damage, Patrick the manager of the Sports Centre, became very angry.

Daniel and his friends started to tidy up the rooms. A few minutes later another boy arrived. His name was Alex. He had heard about the damage at the Sports Centre, and had come to help tidy up.

Daniel noticed that Alex had red marks on his face and in his hair “What are those red marks on your face, Alex?” he asked. “have you cut yourself?” “No”, replied Alex, “I’ve been helping my mum. We’ve been painting our bathroom”.

Daniel noticed that the paint on Alex’s face was the same colour as the paint that as the vandals had used. He became suspicious. “I think Alex is lying” he whispered to Sophie. “Nobody paints their bathroom red. I’m sure Alex is one of the vandals, he’s always causing trouble. I think we should tell Patrick and he ought to punish Alex.”

Daniel’s remark started an argument between him and Sophie. “Daniel” she said angrily. “Don’t be so horrible! You shouldn’t say things like that. You ought not to accuse Alex of being in the gang unless you’ve got some evidence.”

“What about the red paint on his face? Isn’t that evidence?” asked Daniel.

“It could be a coincidence” replied Sophie. “Just because Alex gets into trouble a lot you shouldn’t blame him for everything.”

“Anyway” Sophie continued. “If Alex was one of the vandals, why would he come and help us tidy up?”
